Understanding PIP And MedPay Coverage After A Crash

Two of the most misunderstood parts of an auto policy. Here is what they cover, who qualifies, and how to use them.

Most drivers have heard the terms PIP and MedPay, but very few know what they actually do. Both are first-party coverages on your own auto insurance policy, meaning they pay out regardless of who caused the accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) PIP is required in about a dozen states and optional in several others. It typically covers medical bills, a portion of lost wages, and sometimes essential services like childcare or housekeeping while you recover. Limits vary widely, from $2,500 in some states up to $250,000 in others.

Medical Payments (MedPay) MedPay is an optional add-on in most states. It covers medical expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of fault. Limits usually range from $1,000 to $25,000. Unlike health insurance, there are no copays, no deductibles, and no in-network restrictions.

How to use them File a claim with your own insurer as soon as possible after the accident. Provide medical bills and documentation as treatment progresses. PIP and MedPay can be used alongside health insurance and may also coordinate with a future settlement.

If you are unsure what your policy includes, check your declarations page or ask your insurer for a summary. We can help you understand how these coverages apply to your situation.
