Vehicle Damage And Financial Recovery
From repair estimates to total-loss valuations, here is how property damage is handled separately from injury claims.
Property damage and injury claims move on different timelines. Vehicle damage is usually resolved within weeks. Injury claims can take months or years.
If your vehicle is repairable: . Get at least two written estimates from shops you trust . You are not required to use the insurer's preferred shop . Insist on OEM (original) parts if your policy allows . Document pre-existing condition with photos before repair begins
If your vehicle is a total loss: The insurer will offer the actual cash value (ACV), based on local market comparables. You can dispute a low offer by providing: . Listings of comparable vehicles in your area . Records of recent maintenance, new tires, or aftermarket upgrades . Independent appraisals
Additional recoverable costs: . Towing and storage fees . Rental car for the time you are without your vehicle . Diminished value (the loss in resale value even after repair) . Personal items damaged in the crash
Do not sign a property damage release that also waives injury claims. They should be handled separately.
