What Symptoms Should You Never Ignore?
Some post-accident symptoms warrant immediate emergency care. Here is the list to keep close.
If you experience any of the following after an accident, seek emergency care immediately. Do not wait.
Neurological . Loss of consciousness, even briefly . Confusion, disorientation, or difficulty speaking . Persistent or worsening headache . Repeated vomiting . Vision changes, double vision, or ringing in the ears . Numbness, tingling, or weakness in any limb . Seizures
Cardiac and respiratory . Chest pain or pressure . Shortness of breath . Rapid or irregular heartbeat
Abdominal . Severe or worsening abdominal pain . Visible bruising across the abdomen (seatbelt sign) . Blood in urine or stool . Inability to keep down food or water
Musculoskeletal . Inability to bear weight or move a limb . Visible deformity . Severe pain that does not respond to rest or OTC medication
Mental and emotional . Thoughts of self-harm . Severe anxiety or panic that prevents normal function . Persistent nightmares or flashbacks
When in doubt, go in. The cost of being cautious is much lower than the cost of missing something serious.
