When Should You See A Specialist?
Primary care is the right starting point, but certain symptoms call for specialized evaluation.
After the initial evaluation, your primary care provider may refer you to a specialist, or you may need to ask. These are the most common specialists involved in accident recovery.
Orthopedic specialist For fractures, joint injuries, persistent musculoskeletal pain, or suspected ligament damage.
Neurologist For head injuries, persistent headaches, dizziness, memory or concentration problems, or numbness and tingling that suggests nerve involvement.
Pain management specialist For pain that persists beyond the expected recovery window or is not controlled by standard treatment.
Physical therapist For structured rehabilitation, range-of-motion recovery, and strengthening. Often the most important provider for long-term outcomes.
Chiropractor For spinal alignment, soft-tissue work, and conservative management of back and neck injuries.
Mental health professional For anxiety, PTSD, depression, sleep disturbances, or driving phobia after a crash. These are real injuries and treatment is effective.
If your primary care provider hesitates to refer despite ongoing symptoms, ask directly or seek a second opinion.
